Jewell-On September 18th, the Iowa Economic Development Agency awarded a CAT (Community Attraction and Tourism) Grant to the city of Jewell for $675,000 for the pool project. This week, the Jewell City Council gave their approval of the second and third phases of the pool project to replace the one in use since 1964. Burbach Aquatics of Platteville, Wisconsin will work with the city of Jewell with the design development and construction documents phase. The third phase is for construction related services. There will be further discussion on the pool project at future meetings.
The council also reviewed the engagement letter from Speer Financial of Waterloo for Jewell’s Lagoon project. The compensation for services will be at $5000. Council members went on to approve the contract with Speer Financial at this week’s meeting.
The date of October 26th at 7:10 p.m. was set for a public hearing for the vacating of Fifth Street in Jewell based on the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Committee. The recommendation was to vacate the east 33rd feet of Fifth Street between lots 14 through Lot 8 of block 12.
In another matter, Jewell mayor Mick Walker explained to the council how a water service line was recently hit during work on a neighboring property. The line was not properly located. Mayor Walker mentioned that the city acquiring a locator would be extremely beneficial for future projects. The council agreed to pay the $1,000 bill from Ames Trenching. Jewell city council member will discuss the purchase of a locator at the next council meeting of October 12th.
Saturday, October 31st will be the date for all the fun of Trick or Treat night. There will be Main Street trick or treating from 5:30 until 6:00 that evening. The city-wide trick or treating will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the residential area of Jewell. The Jewell fire station will be open from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. for refreshments and hot dogs for the participants.
