Webster City baseball wins Waterloo Bucks Tournament on Saturday

WATERLOO, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx baseball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon, as they made the trip east on Highway 20 to compete in the Waterloo Bucks Tournament at Riverfront Stadium. The Lynx were joined by the Charles City Comets, Clinton River Kings, and Osage Green Devils.

Webster City opened the tournament against Osage, as the first two innings would be scoreless, before the Lynx offense finally struck in the 3rd with 3 runs off a Matt Tesdahl sac fly, a Carter Mickelson RBI single and a wild pitch to put the Lynx ahead 3-0. Webster City then opened the flood gates in the 4th with 9 runs in the frame off a Jaxon Griffith RBI single, a wild pitch, a Matt Tesdahl 2-run RBI triple, second wild pitch, a Gordon Bargfrede 2-run RBI single and a Braylon Dyvig RBI walk to put the Lynx up 12-0. Osage’s order was shut down in the top of the 5th to cap a 12-0, 5-inning victory.

Matt Tesdahl was the winning pitcher, pitching 4 hitless innings, allowing 0 runs and striking out 10, as Eian Becker completed the combined no-hitter by striking out 1 in an inning of relief. Tesdahl helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBI, as Jaxon Griffith went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and Gordon Bargfrede went 1-for-1 with 2 RBI.

The championship game saw Webster City face off with the Clinton River Kings, as Clinton jumped on the Lynx early with 3 runs in the top of the first, but Webster City answered with a Braylon Dyvig RBI double to make the score 3-1 after the first. Webster City continued to chip away, scoring a run on an error in the 2nd, before tying the game in the 3rd on a Carter Mickelson sac fly to make it 3-3. Clinton took the lead back in the 4th on their own sac fly, but Webster City answered with an Eian Becker RBI single in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4-4. Webster City then took the lead on a Kaleb Hansen RBI double in the 5th at 5-4, as the Lynx pitchers shut down Clinton the rest of the way for the 5-4 win and the tournament title.

Carter Mickelson was the winning pitcher, going 2.2 innings in relief, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits and walking 3 batters. Eian Becker would go 3-for-3 with an RBI, as Braylong Dyvig and Kaleb Hansen were 1-for-4 and 1-for-3 with each having an RBI double.

Webster City baseball returns to action on Tuesday, when they host the St. Edmond Gaels in a North Central Conference doubleheader at Webster City High School, with Game 1 starting at 5 PM on AM 1570/FM 99.1 KZWC or online at kqradio.com.
