WEBSTER CITY, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Eagle Grove Eagles wrestling teams returned to action on Saturday morning, as they competed to send their best to offer to next week’s state tournament in the Class 2A, District 10 wrestling tournament at Webster City High School. The Lynx, Cowboys and Eagles were joined by Clear Lake, Denver, Forest City, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura and Southeast Valley.
It would be a highly successful day for area athletes, as a combined 16 wrestlers scanned their tickets to this week’s state tournament. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows had the top day, capturing the district championship with 235 points and qualifying 10 wrestlers to the state tournament.
Cole Wibholm was the first qualifier at 106 pounds, winning his title match by fall over Clear Lake’s Hayden Shear in 1:13, as Estuardo Lopez followed up winning his championship at 113 by a 7-2 decision over Clear Lake’s John Amos. Paxton Redenius was next up, winning his championship bout in a close contest with Southeast Valley’s Wyatt Blair, winning by a 9-8 decision, as Adrian and Linden Phetxoumphone disposed of their title match opponents quickly, with Adrian winning by fall over Eagle Grove’s Dylan Terwilliger in just 1:48, and Linden winning by a 15-0 tech fall in just 1:21 over Denver’s Kayden Landers. Ryan Hartwig would qualify at 138 despite losing his title match to top-ranked Gavin Landers of Denver, as Hartwig would advance by no contest in the 2nd-place match. Colin Sesker was next to qualify, winning a top-10 battle in the 157 title match over Eagle Grove’s Hayden Schafer by a 5-4 decision, as Ryland Morgan advanced at 165, winning his 2nd-place match by fall over Eagle Grove’s Caden Hauenstein in 3:03. Easton Beyer would qualify at 175 by winning his 2nd-place match by fall over Forest City’s Izaiah Duncan in 1:20, before JT Kelso punctuated things for the Cowboys with a 2nd-period pin over Denver’s Kamden Teisinger at 285.
Eagle Grove would qualify 4 athletes into the upcoming state tournament, the first coming at 126 as Dylan Terwilliger qualified by no-contest at 126, as Terwilliger had already pinned Denver’s Jeb Ebaugh in the semifinals earlier in the day, providing the most shocking moment of the tournament. Hunter Waldo Martinez would qualify at 132, winning his 2nd-place match over Denver’s Kayden Landers in an 18-4 major decision, as Hayden Schafer qualified at 157, winning by no contest in the 2nd-place match, having already defeated Webster City’s Ridge Berninghaus. Jayden Kreitlow was the Eagles final qualifier at 190, winning his 2nd-place match by no contest, having already previously defeated Denver’s Jameson Johnson in the semifinals by a 10-7 decision.
Webster City would send a pair of athletes on to the state tournament, the first coming at 144 as senior Gavin Wynkoop won a wide-open weight class by winning a 7-3 decision over Denver’s Cannen Beaumont to capture a district title. Cody Elliott then qualified at 215, winning his 2nd-place match by fall over Eagle Grove’s Christian Schild in 3:34 to qualify for his second-straight state tournament.
