Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling places 3rd at State Dual Tournament

CORALVILLE, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys wrestling team returned to action on Saturday morning, as they made the journey to the Iowa City metro to compete in the annual State Dual Tournament at XTreme Arena in Coralville. The Cowboys were joined in the 2A Tournament by Decorah, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, West Delaware, Independence, Alburnett, Algona and Glenwood.

CGD opened with a dominant 50-18 win over their North Central Conference rivals in the Algona Bulldogs, as the Cowboys picked up wins by fall from Cole Wibholm (106), Estuardo Lopez (113), Linden Phetxoumphone (132) and Joel Meier (285), with tech falls from Adrian Phetxoumphone (126), Ryan Hartwig (138) and Easton Beyer (190), plus major decisions from Paxton Redenius (8-0) and Ryland Morgan (175).

In the semifinals, the Cowboys were saddled with a very-talented team from Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont as the Rockets got the best of Cowboys, 41-25. The Cowboys picked up a major decision from Ryland Morgan (175), a sudden victory from Adrian Phetxoumphone (126) and forfeits from Linden Phetxoumphone (138), Easton Beyer (190) and JT Kelso (285).

The Cowboys bounced back against the Independence Mustangs in the 3rd place match with a 36-23 victory, as CGD picked up wins by fall from Estuardo Lopez (113), Linden Phetxoumphone (132) and Colin Sesker (157), with a tech fall from Ryan Hartwig, a major decision from Easton Beyer (175) and decisions from Cole Wibholm (106), Paxton Redenius (113) and JT Kelso (285).

CGD would earn 3rd for the 2nd year in a row at the State Duals, as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont captured the 2A Title with a 37-33 win over Decorah in the Championship match.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling returns to action on Saturday, when they compete in their Class 2A, District 10 Tournament at Webster City High School, beginning at 10 AM and will be broadcast on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
