HUMBOLDT, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx wrestling team returned to action on Saturday, as they made the trip west to compete in the annual North Central Conference Championships at Humboldt High School. The Lynx were joined by the host Wildcats, as well as Algona, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Charles City, Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Iowa Falls-Alden and St. Edmond.
Webster City would place 6th in the tournament with a total of 98 points, as the Lynx’s top placer was senior Cody Elliott, who finished runner-up at 215 pounds, winning his first match by fall over Humboldt’s Ayden Fiengo, before winning a 4-2 decision over Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Maddon Evans, as Elliott lost by fall to Algona’s Tayten Rummel in the final.
Angel Ramirez placed 3rd at 106, falling to Clear Lake’s Hayden Shear in the semifinals, before winning by 17-1 tech fall over Humboldt’s Mason Frideres in the consolation semis and winning by a 23-8 tech fall over Algona’s Tyler Friedrich in the 3rd place match. Eli Estlund then placed 3rd at 190, winning his first round match by fall over HD-CAL’s Beau Morton, before losing my major decision to Clear Lake’s Raif Baack. Estlund bounced back with a 10-4 decision over Algona’s Cael Rotert in the consolation semis, before pinning Charles City’s Micah Thompson in the 3rd place match. Jaysen Vankham also placed 3rd for the Lynx, after losing his opening match by fall to Algona’s Brooks Morgan, Vankham pinned Iowa Falls-Alden’s Isaac Doering, before pinning Humboldt’s Johnny Hayden in the 3rd place match.
Other finishes for Webster City saw Gavin Wynkoop place 5th at 144, winning a 5-2 decision over Iowa Falls-Alden’s Sam Robinson, as Ridge Berninghaus also placed 5th at 157, winning by fall over Clear Lake’s Cayden VanVoorhis. Sixth place finishers included Ty Bingham at 113, Lincoln Brookshire at 120, Tariq Burton at 126, Andrew Vaughn at 150 and Briggs Peppel at 165.
Webster City wrestling returns to action on Thursday, when they host the Ballard Bombers for a dual at Webster City High School beginning at 6 PM.
