Iowa State Patrol investigate Friday morning accident on Highway 20

The Iowa State Patrol investigated an accident in the westbound lane of Highway 20 at the 145-mile marker in rural Hamilton County last Friday morning, January 23rd with details released Monday morning.  Reportedly a 1998 model Peterbilt semi-trailer tractor with the driver not identified was traveling on Highway 20 when due to the extreme cold, the semi gelled up. The semi stopped on the shoulder but protruded over the fogline approximately 8 inches and was unable to go over further. The hazard lights to the semi were activated. In the meantime, a westbound 2017 model Ford Explorer XLT SUV driven by Brenda Cousins-Cormaney of Blairsburg was following the semi-truck. The Cousins-Cormaney SUV was unable to see the truck and trailer parked on the shoulder of the road. It then collided with the rear of the trailer when it collided in the median and then caught fire. Cousins-Cormaney was transported to Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City for treatment by Mercy Ambulance. Investigating state patrol trooper Nathan McKim reported the Cousins-Cormaney SUV was totaled with an estimated $1500 in damage to the semi and trailer.
