South Hamilton basketball drops home HOIAC doubleheader to Nevada

JEWELL, Ia. — The South Hamilton Hawks basketball team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Nevada Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered at 6-6, while the Hawk boys entered at 0-12.

Friday’s girls game would be tight the whole way through, as Nevada led 10-9 after the first quarter, adding onto the lead at 20-18 by halftime. The 2nd half would be evenly matched, as the Hawks could not get over the hump in a 38-36 defeat.

Signe Swenson led the Hawks with 9 points and 3 rebounds, as Emma Lammers added 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Nevada’s boys would jump on South Hamilton quickly on Friday night, leading 13-3 after the first quarter, before shutting out the Hawks in the 2nd quarter to lead 28-3 at halftime. South Hamilton managed to outscore the Cubs in the 3rd quarter, as they would not let things get out of hand in a 60-32 defeat.

Sam Koehnk led the Hawks with 11 points, while Webster City-transfer Jackson Olmstead had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals in his varsity debut for South Hamilton. John Nelson led Nevada with 22 points.

South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Des Moines to take on the Saydel Eagles in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Saydel High School with tipoff at 6 PM.
