Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball splits NCC doubleheader with Algona

CLARION, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Cowgirls basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they hosted the Algona Bulldogs in North Central Conference action at CGD High School. The Cowgirls entered at 0-7, while the Cowboys entered at 4-2.

Algona’s girls would jump on CGD from the get out, up 13-0 after the first quarter, a lead that was pushed to 34-0 at halftime, before getting to 46-0 after 3 quarters. CGD would get on the board in the 4th quarter as Algona wrapped up a 63-4 victory.

Ruby Poac scored all 4 points for the Cowgirls, as Hayden McLaughlin led Algona with 18 points.

The boys game followed as CGD got behind the 8-ball early as Algona led 18-10 after the first quarter, pushing that lead to 36-22 at the halftime break. The 3rd quarter proved pivotal as the Cowboys outscored the Bulldogs 18-8 in the frame to trail 44-40 at the end of the quarter. The Cowboys would rally to tie the game at 44-44, before an Algona run put the Bulldogs back ahead by 8. From there, CGD would have another rally in them as JD Morrical’s three with under a minute to go sent the game to overtime at 54-54. The overtime period would be tightly contested, as it was Johnny Lomeli’s turn to play hero, hitting a three with a under a minute to go to give CGD the lead for good, as the Cowboys sealed the game at the free-throw line for a 67-61, overtime victory.

Chaz Lane finished with a team-high 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Huxley Lingenfelter added 15 points and 4 rebounds. Algona’s Nathan Manske led all scorers on Tuesday with 34 points.
