STATE CENTER, Ia. — The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip into Marshall County to take on the West Marshall Trojans in Heart of Iowa Conference action at West Marshall High School. The Norse girls entered at 4-1, while the Norsemen entered at 4-1.
Roland-Story’s girls would be close with West Marshall through the opening quarter, up 13-9 after 1, before the Norse smothered the Trojans defensively, shutting them out in the 2nd quarter to take a 28-9 halftime lead. West Marshall would find rhythm in the 2nd half, but could not overcome the deficit as the Norse won 51-23.
Brinley Carlson led Roland-Story with 17 points and 2 assists, while Lucy Schmidt had 10 points and 6 rebounds, as Riley Johnson had 9 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals.
The boys game followed as the Norsemen looked to continue their winning ways in the HOIAC, leading the Trojans 10-8 after the first quarter and 24-14 at halftime. West Marshall would then continue to claw back, trailing just 39-31 headed into the 4th before making things very close in the 4th, but Roland-Story would emerge with a 53-48 victory.
Eli Van Hove led the Norsemen with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Colin Willis had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Evan Siegert led West Marshall with 15 points.
Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Iowa Falls to take on Iowa Falls-Alden in non-conference action with tipoff at 6 PM.
