South Hamilton basketball swept in conference-opener at Nevada

NEVADA, Ia. — The South Hamilton Hawks basketball team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the short trek into Story County to take on the Nevada Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Nevada High School. South Hamilton’s girls entered at 1-1, while the boys entered at 0-2.

Friday’s girls game would be a slug fest from the very start, as Nevada led just 4-3 after the first quarter, a lead that grew slightly to 14-11 at halftime. South Hamilton would get closer in the 3rd quarter, trailing just 22-21 headed into the 4th, but the Cubs were able to hold on for a 30-27 victory.

Tessa Skartvedt led the Hawks with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks, as Signe Swenson and Emma Lammers each added 3 points.

The boys game followed as a veteran and talented Nevada team stepped on the gas right away, leading the Hawks 32-2 after the first quarter, extending that lead to 54-6 at halftime. The Cubs offense would slow down in the 2nd half as Nevada cruised to a 77-13 win.

Sam Koehnk and Ben Swenson led the Hawks with 4 points each, as Swenson added 7 rebounds. John Nelson led Nevada with 28 points.

South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, as they host the Saydel Eagles in Heart of Iowa Conference action with tipoff at 6 PM.
