Eagle Grove and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball split season-opening doubleheader

EAGLE GROVE, Ia. — The Eagle Grove Eagles and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Cowgirls basketball teams returned to action on Monday night, as the two long-time rivals renewed their annual series at Eagle Grove Elementary School.

Eagle Grove’s girls attacked fast and furious on Monday night, taking a 10-0 lead just 1:15 into the game, leading 28-2 after the first quarter. The Eagles kept their foot on the gas as they led 53-4 at halftime, as the Eagle Grove starters exited for good halfway through the 3rd quarter. The Eagles bench continued to put up points to finalize a 91-6 victory.

Taytum Edwards had a historic night for the Eagles, scoring a school-record 45 points and hitting 8 three-pointers in the win. Fellow sophomore Ellie Lenning added 15 points off the bench. CGD saw baskets from Audrey Egland, Dianna Martinez Santiago and Daniela Rodriguez.

As the boys game followed, the start was a back-and-forth battle that saw CGD lead Eagle Grove 19-14 after the first. Eagle Grove would rally to tie the game early in the 2nd, but CGD then heated up from three, allowing the Cowboys to push ahead for a 45-23 halftime lead. CGD continued to ring up the points in the 2nd half, eventually coming away with an 81-54 win.

Chaz Lane would lead the Cowboys with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Johnny Lomeli added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 three-pointers. Adrian Whipple had a game-high 24 points for Eagle Grove, as Braylon Kling added 10 points.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball returns to action on Friday when they host St. Edmond in their conference opener at CGD High School, beginning at 6:15 PM. Eagle Grove basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Winnebago County to take on the Forest City Indians in Top of Iowa West action, beginning at 6:15 PM.
