WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Algona Bulldogs in Class 3A, District 1 action for senior night at Lynx Field in Webster City. The Lynx entered at 3-5 and 1-2 in district play, while Algona entered at 3-5 and 0-3 in district play.
Webster City took the opening kickoff on Friday night and would put together an 8.5 minute drive, capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run by Aiden Hrnicek as the Lynx took an early 7-0 lead. Algona would have a punt blocked on their ensuing possession, as the Lynx took advantage and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Aiden Hrnicek as Webster City went up 14-0. Algona answered back with an 80-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Manske to Tate Garman to cut the score to 14-6, but the Lynx offense would have a response as Aiden Hrnicek scored his 3rd touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run to put Webster City up 21-6 early in the 2nd quarter. Algona struck back almost immediately with an 87-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Manske to William Weichert as the Bulldogs cut the score to 21-14. Webster City would again put together a scoring drive as Aiden Hrnicek scored his 4th touchdown of the half from 2 yards out, before Kaleb Hansen broke off a 45-yard touchdown run as Webster City led 35-14 at the halftime break.
The 2nd half would be much quieter as Algona scored late in the 3rd quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Manske to Evan Allie to make it 35-21, but the Webster City defense would dig in and get the stops needed to come away with a 35-21 win.
The KZWC Player of the Games were Webster City seniors Aiden Hrnicek and Jaxon Griffith, as Hrnicek had 20 carries for 69 yards and 4 touchdowns, with 5.5 tackles, a TFL and a blocked punt, while Griffith had 20 carries for 143 yards, along with 5.5 tackles and an interception. Senior Eli Estlund also set a new school-record for sacks in a game with 3, along with 6.5 tackles and 5 TFL.
Webster City football returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Orange City to take on MOC-Floyd Valley in Class 1A, District 3 action at Korver Field with kickoff at 7 PM.
