Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football routs Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, 43-7

GARNER — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip north of Highway 69 to take on the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals in Class 1A, District 3 action at GHV High School in Garner. CGD entered at 4-3 and 2-2 in district play, while GHV entered at 0-7 and 0-4 in district play.

Friday’s first quarter would be quiet until CGD was able to mount a drive and score on a 10-yard touchdown run by Selvin Gonzalez to put the Cowboys ahead 7-0. CGD would then score on the first play of the 2nd quarter, as Colin Sesker scored on a 22-yard touchdown run made it 14-0, as the Cowboys scored on the first play of their next possession, scoring on a 66-yard touchdown run by Joel Meier as the Cowboys took a 20-0 lead. The Cowboys continued their 2nd half onslaught with a 17-yard touchdown run by Selvin Gonzalez, followed by an Anir Akdim 29-yard field goal, before a Kolton Hefti interception set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Easton Beyer as the Cowboys led 37-0 at halftime.

Clarion would strike early in the 3rd quarter on Selvin Gonzalez’s 3rd touchdown of the night from 9 yards out to put the Cowboys ahead 43-0, as GHV would score a garbage time touchdown in the 4th to cap a 43-7 win for CGD.

The Cowboys would rush for 400 yards and average over 10 yards per carry, as senior Joel Meier had 8 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown, while Colin Sesker added 5 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown. Selvin Gonzalez added 9 carries for 67 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Traesyn Cope had 4 tackles, 2.5 TFL and a sack.
