Know The Foe Week 8: Webster City vs. Algona

The Webster City Lynx football team returns to action on Friday night, when they host the Algona Bulldogs in Class 3A, District 1 action for senior night at Lynx Field in Webster City. Webster City enters at 2-5 and 1-2 in district play, while Algona enters at 3-4 and 0-3 in district play. Friday’s meeting is the 90th all-time meeting between the two programs, as Webster City leads the all-time series 58-31-1, but Algona won last year’s meeting by a score of 28-21.

Algona enters with a record of 3-4 with non-district wins over Spirit Lake, Forest City and Waverly-Shell Rock, with a non-district loss to (2A) top-ranked Kuemper Catholic, and district losses to MOC-Floyd Valley, Humboldt and Sioux Center by a combined total of 8 points. The Bulldogs are led by junior quarterback Nathan Manske, who’s thrown for 1,021 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for almost 500 yards and 8 touchdowns. Manske’s favorite target has been senior Tate Garman, who’s caught 27 passes for 486 yards and 3 touchdowns, while speedster Evan Allie has 22 catches for 312 yards and 2 touchdowns. William Weichert has been the mainstay at running back, rushing for 700 yards and 6 touchdowns on the season. The Bulldogs do possess a veteran offensive line that have played a lot of football, led by the likes of Max Nevitt, Foster Myhre and Will Limbaugh.

Defensively, the Bulldogs back seven has played well throughout most of the year, as the secondary is led by junior Nathan Manske, who leads the unit with 38.5 tackles and 2 interceptions. William Weichert leads the unit with 3 interceptions, while senior Tate Garman has 2 picks and a pick six. The linebacking core has been highly-productive as well, with Tayten Rummel and Cael Rotert leading the unit with 32.5 tackles each. Rummel has 7 TFL and 4 sacks, while Rotert has 2 picks and a pick six. Taevyn Zinnel has added 27.5 tackles and a TFL. The defensive line is led by junior Will Limbaugh, who’s tallied a unit-high 28 tackles with 5 TFL and 2 sacks. Mason Ulrich has added 13 tackles, 6 TFL and a sack, while Brody Shipler has 18.5 tackles, 3 TFL and a sack.

Webster City football will try to come away with a senior night victory and keep an outside shot at qualifying for the playoffs alive. The Lynx defense will look to limit big plays following back-to-back weeks of Bishop Heelan and Sioux Center hitting big yardage plays, while Webster City’s offense will look to control the line of scrimmage and keep a talented Algona defense on its heels.

Kickoff is slated for 7 PM on Friday Night from Lynx Field and can be heard on AM 1570 KZWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
