Webster City football falls at (3A) #3 Bishop Heelan, 28-6

SIOUX CITY — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the long trip west on Highway 20 to take on the Crusaders of Bishop Heelan in Class 3A, District 1 action Memorial Field in Sioux City. Webster City entered at 2-4 and 1-1 in district play, as Bishop Heelan entered at 5-1, 2-0 in district play and ranked #3 in Class 3A.

Much of the first quarter would be scoreless, but it was Bishop Heelan that took the lid off the scoreless tie as Noah Conley went deep to Grant Whitcomb for a 54-yard touchdown pass to put the Crusaders ahead 7-0. The Crusaders would tack on another touchdown midway through the 2nd quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Kasen Thomas to take a 14-0 lead, and following a fumble on the ensuing Webster City possession, as the Crusaders went back to the air for a 40-yard touchdown pass from Conley to Caden Lester to put the Crusaders up 21-0. Webster City would put together a drive late in the 1st half as Aiden Hrnicek found Jaxon Griffith for a 15-yard touchdown pass as the Lynx trailed 21-6 at the halftime break.

The second half would see both defenses stiffen up and not allow either offense to put together scoring opportunities, but it was Bishop Heelan that finally bucked the trend late as an Avery Favors scored with just over a minute left in the game to cap a 28-6 victory for Bishop Heelan.

The KZWC Player of the Game was Webster City junior Grant Ahrens, who had 3 tackles, a sack a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Jaxon Griffith was the Lynx leading rusher with 73 yards on 21 carries, while scoring the only touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Aiden Hrnicek.

Webster City football returns to action on Friday night, when they host the Algona Bulldogs in Class 3A, District 1 action for Senior Night at Lynx Field with kickoff at 7 PM.
