Eagle Grove football routs Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on senior night, 50-21

EAGLE GROVE — The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals in Class 1A, District 3 action for senior night at Gene Hinrichsen Field in Eagle Grove. Eagle Grove entered at 1-5 and 0-3 in district play, while GHV entered at 0-6 and 0-3 in district play.

GHV would get off to a good start as their opening drive was capped off by a 9-yard touchdown run by Parker Stearns as the Cardinals took an initial 7-0 lead. Eagle Grove responded quickly with a fast march down the field capped off by a 14-yard touchdown run by Trenton Robinson to put the Eagles ahead 8-7 after the 2-point conversion. Following a GHV punt, Eagle Grove ripped off a big run as Adrian Whipple kept an option play for a 66-yard touchdown run as Eagle Grove added on to their lead at 16-7. Following a 4th down stop, the Eagles put together a 90-yard touchdown drive, capped by an Adrian Whipple quarterback sneak as Eagle Grove took a 24-7 lead. GHV would grab a score before halftime as Parker Stearns scored for the 2nd time on an 18-yard run to make it 24-13, but Eagle Grove hit another big play on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Whipple to Leelan Spencer as Eagle Grove led 30-13 at the halftime break.

Eagle Grove would keep their foot on the gas in the 2nd half, as the Eagles scored on the opening drive on a 31-yard touchdown run by Aaron Alaniz as the Eagles pushed the lead to 36-13. Following a 4th-down stop on defense, Leelan Spencer’s 69-yard run led to a 5-yard touchdown pass from Adrian Whipple to Gavin Pedersen as the Eagles extended their lead to 44-13. GHV would score on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Preston Davison to Dennis Beery to make it 44-21, but Eagle Grove slammed the door shut on the ensuing drive with a 63-yard touchdown run by Trenton Robinson as the Eagles capped a 50-21 victory.

Adrian Whipple would have a stellar game, going 2/4 passing for 68 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also carrying 3 times for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trenton Robinson had 14 carries for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns, as Leelan Spencer had 4 carries for 135 yards along with a 63-yard touchdown reception.

Eagle Grove football returns to action on Friday night, when they travel to Grundy County to take on the top-ranked Grundy Center Spartans in their Class 1A, District 3 finale at 7 PM.
