Webster City football falls at home to Sioux Center, 42-28

WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Sioux Center Warriors in Class 3A, District 1 action at Lynx Field at Webster City High School. Webster City entered at 2-3 and 1-0 in district play, Sioux Center entered at 4-1 and 0-1 in district play.

Things started well for Webster City on Friday night, as the Lynx scored on their opening drive on a 29-yard touchdown run by Aiden Hrnicek to put the Lynx ahead 7-0. However, the lead was short-lived as Sioux Center went to their bag of exotics as they hit an 80-yard touchdown pass on a hook-and-ladder to tie the game at 7-7. The Lynx fumbled on their ensuing possession and Sioux Center would score on a 58-yard touchdown pass from Ezra Hibma to Cody Sandbulte put the Warriors ahead 14-7. Webster City would tie the game late in the first half with a 64-yard touchdown run by Aiden Hrnicek to make it 14-14, but the Warriors had an answer on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Hibma to Joseph Molina to make the halftime score 21-14 in favor of Sioux Center.

Webster City would score first in the 2nd half on a 25-yard touchdown run by Aiden Hrnicek to make it 21-21, but Sioux Center responded on the ensuing drive with an 80-yard touchdown run by Cody Sandbulte to put the Warriors ahead 28-21. Webster City would be stuffed inside the 1-yard line and throw an interception on their next two possessions, as Sioux Center scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Ezra Hibma to Braedon Perez-Hietbrink to put the Warriors ahead 35-21. Webster City would get back to within a score on Aiden Hrnicek’s 4th touchdown of the day on a 31-yard run to make it 35-28, but Sioux Center would march the field with a time-consuming drive and score with 1:17 to go on a 1-yard touchdown run by Joseph Molina to cap a 42-28 win.

The KZWC Player of the Game was Webster City senior Aiden Hrnicek, who rushed for 188 yards and 4 touchdowns on 12 carries, while going 3-for-7 for 50 yards and 2 interceptions. Jaxon Griffith added 85 yards rushing on 18 carries, along with 2 receptions for 44 yards, 4 tackles and a forced fumble.
