Roland-Story football outlasts Dike-New Hartford in double overtime, 35-34

STORY CITY — The Roland-Story Norsemen football team returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines in Class 2A, District 4 action at Kerry Van Winkle Field in Story City. The Norsemen entered at 3-2 and 2-0 in district play, while Dike-New Hartford entered at 4-1 and 2-0 in district play.

Roland-Story started things off with a bang, after honoring the late Kerry Van Winkle by running his signature wishbone formation before taking the field, the Norsemen scored on the 2nd play of the game on an 81-yard touchdown pass from Colin Willis to Luke Thoreson as the Norsemen took an early 7-0 lead. Roland-Story would get back on the scoreboard late in the 1st quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Cody Long to take a 14-0 lead, before Dike-New Hartford scored on a 7-yard touchdown run by Devlin Davis to bring the score to 14-7. The Norsemen wouldn’t take long to respond as Cody Long ripped off a 79-yard touchdown run on the first play of the ensuing possession as Roland-Story led 21-7 and would take that lead into halftime.

Following a scoreless 3rd quarter, the 4th quarter was chalked full of fireworks, as Dike-New Hartford scored a 2-yard touchdown run from Devlin Davis to bring the score to 21-14. The Wolverines then struck again late in the 4th quarter as Peyton Pokorny extended the play with his feet, throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Caeden Bakker to tie the game at 21-21, as they contest eventually went into overtime. In the first overtime, Roland-Story scored on a 5-yard quarterback scramble by Colin Willis, but could not convert the 2-point conversion attempt as the Norsemen led 27-21. Dike-New Hartford countered with a Peyton Pokorny quarterback sneak to tie the game at 27-27, and with an extra-point to win the game, Roland-Story’s Cody Long came off the edge and blocked the kick to send the game to double overtime. The Wolverines would score first in double overtime on a Peyton Pokorny pass to Caden Bakker to make the score 34-27, as Roland-Story would score on their possession in double overtime on a 4th down pass from Colin Willis to Luke Thoreson to make it 34-33, as the Norsemen went for 2 and the win and would convert on a pass from Colin Willis to Cody Long as the Norsemen claimed a 35-34, double-overtime win.

Cody Long would have a career-game on his senior night, rushing for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries, along with catching 3 passes for 15 yards and the converting the winning 2-point conversion. Defensively, Long had a game-high 10.5 tackles, 2 sacks and a 4th quarter interception. Colin Willis was 10-for-16 for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception, while Luke Thoreson had 5 catches for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Roland-Story football returns to action on Friday, when they travel up I-35 to take on the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs in Class 2A, District 4 action with kickoff at 7 PM.
