HUMBOLDT — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they traveled to Humboldt County to take on the Humboldt Wildcats in their Class 3A, District 1 opener at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt. Webster City entered at 1-3, while Humboldt entered at 2-2.
Defenses ruled early as both teams traded punts on their opening drives, as Webster City’s second offensive drive took up the last 5 minutes of the 1st quarter and nearly half of the 2nd quarter and was capped by a Jaxon Griffith 2-yard touchdown run to put the Lynx ahead 7-0. Humboldt answered quickly on a deep shot as Jackson Flaherty hit his brother Chase Flaherty for a 69-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7. Webster City was then able to put together a drive late in the 2nd quarter as they took the lead on a 5-yard touchdown run from Jaxon Griffith as the Lynx lead 14-7 at the halftime break.
Humboldt would put together a promising opening drive of the 2nd half, but Webster City would hold them to a turnover on downs, before the Lynx put together another epic drive, running off much of the 3rd quarter and a chunk of the 4th quarter and capped it with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jaxon Griffith to put the Lynx ahead 21-7. Humboldt responded quickly on the ensuing drive, finished by a Cash McIntire 10-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 21-14. Webster City’s offense came out to run the clock out, but as the Wildcats made a stop and forced a punt, but a running into the punter penalty allowed Webster City to go for it on 4th and 2 and convert to run out the clock in a 21-14 win.
The KZWC Player of the Game was senior Jaxon Griffith, who carried 28 times for 123 yards and 3 touchdowns, as Aiden Hrnicek was 2/3 throwing the ball for 14 yards, while rushing for 68 yards on 15 carries. Kaleb Hansen also rushed for 59 yards on 19 carries.
