(1A) #10 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows falls to (1A) #1 Grundy Center, 56-8

CLARION — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Grundy Center Spartans in Class 1A, District 3 action at the Clarion Football Field at CGD Middle School. CGD entered at 3-1 and ranked #10 in Class 1A, while Grundy Center entered at 4-0, ranked #1 and holding a 43-game winning streak.

CGD took the football first and managed to drive out to midfield, before a false start penalty on 4th and 1 forced the Cowboys to punt. The Spartans then drove the field through the short passing game, capping the drive with a Judd Jirvosky quarterback sneak to put Grundy Center ahead 7-0. CGD punted on their ensuing drive, before the Spartans drove a shorter field and scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jirvosky to Cael Combs to put the Spartans ahead 14-0. The Cowboys went to the air on the next possession, but a 3rd-down pass from Kolton Hefti was picked off by Judd Jirvosky and returned deep into Cowboy territory. Jirvosky took advantage the very next play on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Devin Hinders to put Grundy Center ahead 21-0. The Cowboys went back to the air again on the ensuing drive, as Hefti was picked off by Judd Jirvosky for a 2nd time, as he returned it deep into Cowboy territory once again, as moments later Jirvosky threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Eli Wegmann to put Grundy Center ahead 28-0. The Spartans would score on their next drive on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Jirvosky to Eli Wegmann as Grundy Center led at halftime 35-0.

Grundy Center continued to pour it on to begin the 2nd half as Hayden Geerdes returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to put the Spartans ahead 42-0. A turnover on the Cowboys first series of the 2nd half resulted in Judd Jirvosky scoring his 6th touchdown of the game on a 22-yard run to put the Spartans ahead 49-0, while Cooper Keller had a 61-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to put the Spartans ahead 56-0. The Cowboys would get on the board in the 4th quarter off a 9-yard touchdown run by Colin Sesker to bring the final score to 56-8.

The KQWC Player of the Game was senior Selvin Gonzalez, who rushed for 64 yards on 16 carries, while making 3 tackles. Traesyn Cope had 2.5 tackles and a sack, while Joel Meier had 12 carries for 42 yards.
