Jewell- It will cost Jewell residents and businesses an extra 15 percent for water rates starting this November. Last Monday evening the Jewell City Council held the second reading of the ordinance with the third and final reading set for the next meeting on October 13th. The council met with officials with Carrico Aquatic Resources to look at the existing pool filter and offer a course of action for the replacement. Carrico gave a recommendation to replace the filter. It was recommended that the Carrico staff do the work as long as the filter met the specs for the new pool. The current pool has been in use since 1964.The new filter will be paid for by SHAPE at the cost of$23,706. The labor will be paid for by the city at a cost $27,376.
The Jewell City Council welcomed Sean Hannel as a new member of the Jewell Fire and Rescue Department. Jewell Fire and Rescue Chief Duane Hendrickson informed the council that Hannel was previously a member of the Gilbert Fire Department and has a plethora of skills to bring to the EMT Services Department.
Jewell Public Works Director Terry Anderson informed the council that the Scout House was cleaned up. With the Jewell Street watermain replacement project, crews on September 24th started digging in the affected area.
Friday,October 31st will be the official night for Trick or Treating from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in Jewell. The Jewell Fire Department will serve hot dogs at the fire station during the same hours from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
The two city owned lots on Park Street will be sold for $10,000 each with stipulation that a house would have to be built within two years. The houses would then qualify for a five-year tax abatement. There will be further discussion on the lots on Main Street in Jewell at the next council meeting.
Jewell JADE president Jackie Reiter informed the council that there will be wreaths on the light poles for the holiday season. Reiter announced that the Jewell Jubilee dates for next year will be June 13th through 15 with all the activities associated returning to Jewell next year.
