Webster City football falls on homecoming to (4A) #8 Gilbert, 34-21

WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted to the Gilbert Tigers for homecoming night and their non-district finale at Lynx Field in Webster City. Webster City entered with a record of 1-2, while Gilbert entered at 3-0 and ranked #8 in Class 4A.

Webster City would put together a solid opening drive in the first quarter, but it would not result in points, as Gilbert answered with a 78-yard touchdown run by Gabe Fierce to put the Tigers ahead 7-0, which was the score at the end of the frame. Gilbert would start the 2nd quarter with a bang, blocking an Israel Torres punt and recovering in the endzone for a touchdown to put the Tigers ahead 14-0. The Lynx would respond on their ensuing drive, as Aiden Hrnicek scored on a 43-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 14-7, however Gilbert would score right before halftime on an Ethan Rash quarterback sneak to take a 20-7 lead at halftime.

Out of the halftime break, Webster City was first on the board as Kaleb Hansen broke free for a 57-yard touchdown run to cut the score to 20-14 in favor of Gilbert, but the Tigers would answer with a Cameron Cantonwine touchdown run of 43 yards to put Gilbert ahead 27-14. Gilbert then started the 4th quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Cameron Cantonwine to put the Tigers ahead 34-14, as Aiden Hrnicek answered with a quarterback sneak late in the 4th quarter to bring the final score to 34-21.

Jaxon Griffith was the KZWC Player of the Game, rushing for 110 yards on 19 carries, while also catching 2 passes for 33 yards and collecting 3 tackles. Kaleb Hansen led the Lynx with 111 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Aiden Hrnicek had 15 carries for 86 yards and 2 scores, while also going 2/3 passing for 33 yards.

Webster City football returns to action on Friday, when they open Class 3A, District 1 play with a road trip to take on the Humboldt Wildcats at Mason Maach Field, with kickoff at 7 PM.
