JEWELL — The South Hamilton Hawks football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Titans of South Central Calhoun in their Class 1A, District 2 opener at Bill Taylor Field in Jewell. South Hamilton entered at 0-3, while South Central Calhoun entered at 1-2.
South Central Calhoun would take the ball first and march down for a touchdown on a 3-yard touchdown run by Cooper Nattress to put the Titans up 7-0, which would be the only score of the opening quarter. Following a Hawk punt, South Hamilton’s defense would force a turnover on a Kash Northrup interception to give the Hawks the ball back, but a partially blocked punt set up a short field for the Titans, who scored on a 13-yard touchdown run by Cooper Nattress to bring the score to 14-0 in favor of South Central Calhoun. The Titans then scored right before half on a quarterback sneak from Cade Higgins to bring the score to 21-0 at the halftime break.
South Hamilton got the football out of the halftime break and would drive down and score on a 5-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Gelder to cut the score to 21-6. South Central Calhoun responded on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Cade Higgins to Garrett Krause to put the Titans ahead 28-6, but South Hamilton responded with a 47-yard touchdown run from Wyatt Gelder to bring the score to 28-14. Cooper Nattress scored his 3rd touchdown of the night to ice the game for the Titans in a 35-14 victory.
Wyatt Gelder led the Hawks offense with 115 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries, while Maddux Becker rushed for 45 yards on 7 carries. Brody Harris led the Hawks defense with 8.5 tackles and a TFL, while Ben Swenson finished with 7 tackles, a TFL and a sack.
South Hamilton football returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Wall Lake to take on the East Sac Raiders in Class 1A, District 2 action with kickoff at 7 PM.
