MANLY — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip north on I-35 into Worth County to take on the Central Springs Panthers in Class 1A, District 3 action at the Manly Football Field. CGD entered with a 2-1 record, while Central Springs entered at 2-1.
Friday’s first quarter would be scoreless, as CGD had the football to begin the 2nd quarter and would score on a 29-yard touchdown run by Selvin Gonzalez to put the Cowboys ahead 7-0. The game then went into a lightning delay, before action resumed in the 2nd quarter, but no further scoring was had as CGD took a 7-0 lead into the halftime break.
CGD would score on their opening drive of the 2nd half, as Selvin Gonzalez capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 13-0. The ensuing Central Springs drive was stopped following a Kolton Hefti fumble recover, as the Cowboys marched the field and scored on a 6-yard touchdown run by Joel Meier to take a 19-0 lead. Following a Panthers punt, the Cowboys offense went back to work once more, as Kolton Hefti found Huxley Lingenfelter for a 26-yard touchdown pass to put CGD ahead 25-0. The Cowboys defense would get a 4th-down stop, before marching down and putting a stamp on the game with a Joel Meier 7-yard touchdown run to bring the final score to 33-0.
Selvin Gonzalez had the top night, rushing for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries, as Joel Meier had 15 carries for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kolton Hefti filled in admirably at quarterback for an injured JD Morrical, going 6-for-8 for 98 yards and a touchdown, as Huxley Lingenfelter had 5 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, along with a team-high 9.5 tackles and a TFL.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football returns to action on Friday, when they host 1A top-ranked Grundy Center Spartans at the Clarion Football Field with kickoff at 7 PM.
