Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football falls in defensive slugfest at Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 7-6

HAMPTON — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip east on Highway 3 to take on the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs in non-district action at Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School. CGD entered Friday at 1-0, as HD-CAL entered at 0-1.

It would be zany start to Friday’s game, as both CGD and HD-CAL combined for 3 turnovers in the games opening stages, before Hampton-Dumont-CAL was first on the board with a 36-yard touchdown run by Joseph Powers to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-0. That 7-0 lead would last Hampton-Dumont-CAL into the halftime break.

The 2nd half would be much of the same, as both defenses ruled throughout the game, making stop after stop. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows would finally punch one in on a 9-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to make the score 7-6 after a failed 2-point conversion, but CGD could not muster anymore offense in a 7-6 loss.

Selvin Gonzalez was the leading rusher for the Cowboys, carrying 17 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, as JD Morrical went 5/13 with 43 yards, while rushing 10 times for 38 yards. Huxley Lingenfelter led the Cowboy defense with 7 tackles, a TFL and a fumble recover, as Joel Meier and Cooper Nosbush also recovered fumbles.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football returns to action on Friday, when they wrap up non-district play by hosting Estherville-Lincoln Central for homecoming in Clarion, with kickoff at 7 PM.
