Jewell City Council faces a varied agenda this week.

JEWELL-At this week’s Jewell City Council meeting, Jewell Mayor Mickey Walker and Public Works Director Terry Anderson attended a meeting with the officials of Iowa Rural Water. The city has been exploring the idea of tying on to rural water as an alternative emergency source of water for the town. The city of Jewell would be required to put in a meter and valve pit, which is estimated to cost between $120,000 and $150,000. The city would not be charged monthly but would be charged just water usage which would be at $5.77 per 1000 gallons of water. The city would be responsible for anything after the meter and Rural Water would be responsible for anything before the meter. The estimated cost of the entire project would be roughly $320,000. There was no action taken by the Jewell City Council on this matter.

Public works director Anderson is continuing to fact-find and prepare for the maintenance of the Jewell water tower. The goal is to wait one year before starting the project, however plans have not been definitely worked out with Maguire.

The Jewell City Council accepted the request for a street closure on Collins and the alley for a band and event at Jewell Market on September 26 from 4:00 until 9:00p.m.

The date of August 25th was set for a public hearing for the proposed water/sewer rate increase for Jewell residents and businesses at 7:30 p.m.

A discussion on crosswalks on the Main Street in Jewell was tabled until the next council meeting on August 11th.
