South Hamilton baseball falls to (1A) #10 Newman Catholic in 1A substate semis, 12-0

The South Hamilton Hawks baseball team returned to action on Saturday, as they made the trip to Mason City to take on the Knights of Newman Catholic in their Class 1A, Substate 3 semifinal at Newman Catholic High School. South Hamilton entered Saturday at 5-16, while Newman Catholic entered at 24-8 and ranked #10 in Class 1A.

Newman Catholic would jump on the Hawks from the get out on Saturday, plating 4 runs in the 1st, followed by 3 runs in the 2nd to take a 7-0 lead. The Knights offense would continue to pile on in the 3rd and 4th, putting up 2 runs in the 3rd and 3 runs in the 4th to take a 12-0 lead. Newman kept South Hamilton off the scoreboard in the 5th to clinch a 12-0, 5-inning victory.

Conner Deppe went 2-for-2 with a pair of single, while Carson Gibbs, Holden Moore and Braden Young all recorded hits. Landon Sogard picked up the loss, allowing 9 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits and struck out 2.

Newman Catholic advances to their Class 1A, Substate 3 final to take on (1A) #9 Kee at Decorah High School with first pitch at 7 PM on Tuesday. South Hamilton’s season ends with a record of 5-17.
