Roland-Story baseball falls short in upset bid against (2A) #3 Van Meter, 6-5

The Roland-Story Norsemen baseball team returned to action on Saturday, as they traveled to Van Meter to take on the Van Meter Bulldogs in their Class 2A, Substate 7 semifinal at Van Meter High School. Roland-Story entered at 22-9, while Van Meter entered at 23-8 and ranked #3 in Class 2A.

It would be Van Meter that got off to a quick start as the Bulldogs scored 2 runs in the first off an error and an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. Roland-Story settled in from there, getting on the board in the 2nd on a Cooper Triggs RBI double to cut the score to 2-1. The 3rd inning would be a prosperous one for the Norsemen, putting up 4 runs in the frame off an errors, a William Zamzow RBI groundout and a 2-run home run from DH Chance Georgious to give the Norsemen a 5-2 lead. It would take until the 5th inning for Van Meter to find a response, scoring a run on a double steal, followed by an RBI single in the 6th to make the score 5-4. Van Meter then tied the game in the 7th on an RBI single, as the Bulldogs walked it off with an RBI sac fly to cap an 6-5 comeback victory.

Cooper Triggs would go 2-for-3 with an RBI double, Jake Knoll went 2-for-3 as Chance Georgious went 1-for-4 with his 2-run home run. Cael Faber pitched a whale of a game, allowing 6 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and struck out 3 in 6.1 innings.

Van Meter advances to face West Marshall in their Class 2A, Substate 7 Final on Tuesday at Marshalltown High School at 7 PM. Roland-Story’s season ends with a record of 22-10.
