Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball holds off Eagle Grove in extras, 5-4

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Eagle Grove Eagles baseball teams returned to action on Friday, as the 2 longtime rivals faced off with one another in non-conference action at Greenwood Park in Eagle Grove. CGD entered at 7-15, while Eagle Grove entered at 4-12.

Eagle Grove got on the board 1st off an error in the first inning to put the Eagles up 1-0. CGD answered in the top of the 3rd with an Ethan Hasty RBI single to tie the game, as Eagle Grove immediately answered as Leelan Spencer scored on a wild pitch to put the Eagles back up 2-1. CGD would tie it back up in the 4th on a Brandon Stein RBI single to make it 2-2, before the Cowboys took the lead on an Owen Sweeney sac fly to put CGD ahead 3-2. The Cowboys added an insurance run in the 7th off a Chaz Lane RBI single to make it 4-2, but Eagle Grove would rally in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-run RBI single by Leelan Spencer to send the game to extras at 4-4. In extras, CGD scored in the top of the 8th off a Chaz Lane RBI fielder’s choice to go up 5-4, as the Eagles could not score in the bottom of the 8th as CGD claimed a 5-4 win.

Ethan Hasty would go 2-for-3 with 2 singles, an RBI and 3 walks, while Chaz Lane was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. Drew Smith would pick up the win, allowing no runs on 3 hits and striking out 1 for CGD. Leelan Spencer went 2-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI, while Brett Ascherl went 1-for-5 with a double. Syrus Willard was charged with the loss, allowing 1 run on 1 hits and struck out 4 in 2 innings.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Humboldt to take on the Wildcats in an NCC doubleheader with first pitch at 5 PM. Eagle Grove baseball returns to action on Monday, when they host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in Top of Iowa West action with first pitch at 7:30 PM.
