Webster City baseball drops NCC doubleheader to (3A) #4 Algona

The Webster City Lynx baseball team returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Algona Bulldogs in North Central Conference doubleheader action at Webster City High School. Webster City entered at 6-7, while Algona entered at 12-1 and ranked #4 in Class 3A.

Game 1 saw Algona take advantage of Webster City mistakes early, as the Bulldogs put up a run in each of the 1st 3 innings to take a 3-0 lead. Following a scoreless 4th, the Bulldogs doubled their total with a 3-run 5th to take a 6-0 lead, before adding a run in the 6th to make it 7-0. Webster City would find life in the 6th as Alex Staley scored on a passed ball, followed by an Aiden Hrnicek 2-run RBI single to bring the score to 7-3. Algona would settle down after that, adding a run in the 7th and shutting down the Lynx in the bottom half to secure an 8-3 win.

Aiden Hrnciek contributed the only hit of the game for the Lynx, going 1-for-2 with a 2-run RBI single. Braylon Dyvig was charged with the loss, allowing 7 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and striking out 6 in 5.2 innings.

Game 2 would see a scoreless 1st inning, but Algona’s offense would spark up in the 2nd with 3 runs, followed by a 3-run 3rd and 3-run 4th to take a 9-0 lead. Webster City would get on the board with a Braylon Dyvig RBI single in the 5th to cut it to 9-1, but Algona would answer with 2 more runs in the 5th to enforce the 10-run rule as they captured a 11-1 victory.

Boston Farley and Braylon Dyvig would each go 2-for-2, as Dyvig drove in a run, while Gavin Griffith was 2-for-3. Griffith was charged with the loss, allowing 9 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings.

Webster City baseball returns to action on Thursday, when they travel to Pocahontas to take on Pocahontas Area in non-conference action, beginning at 7:30 PM.
