Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball hosts Wayne Bergstrom Classic on Friday

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Friday, as they hosted the inaugural Wayne Bergstrom Classic at CGD High School. The Cowboys were joined by Aplington-Parkersburg and Turkey Valley, with proceeds from the tournament going to Tori’s Angels.

CGD started the day by taking on Turkey Valley, as the Trojans started the game putting up 2 runs in the 1st to take a 2-0 lead. The Cowboys would get the lead back in the 2nd with a 4-run frame, thanks to an RBI groundout from Ryland Morgan, a passed ball, a Paxton Lingenfelter RBI single, followed by a Lingenfelter steal of home to take a 4-2 lead. Turkey Valley answered with 3 runs in the 3rd to take a 5-4 lead, but CGD answered with 3 runs in the bottom half off another Paxton Lingenfelter RBI single, followed by a wild pitch and an error to put CGD up 7-5. Turkey Valley would score a run in the 4th, before scoring 2 in the 5th to take an 8-7 lead, which would hold until the end for an 8-7 loss for the Cowboys.

Paxton Lingenfelter had the top game at the plate for CGD, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Ryland Morgan went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jacob Ruba was charged with the loss in relief, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 1.

The Cowboys followed by taking on Aplington-Parkersburg, and the Falcons would jump on CGD from the start, as the Falcons plated 4 runs in each of the first 2 innings to take an 8-0 lead. CGD would plate 2 runs in the 3rd off a passed ball and an Ethan Hasty steal of home to cut it to 8-2, but A-P would score 3 more runs in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th to enforce a run-rule with a 13-2 victory.
