The Webster City Lynx boys soccer team returned to action on Monday, as they made the long drive into Northwest Iowa to take on the Sioux Center Warriors in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A State Tournament at the American State Bank Sports Complex at Dordt University. Webster City entered at 16-0, while Sioux Center entered at 13-0-2.
Due to severe weather in Northwest Iowa, the game was moved to the aforementioned indoor facility as the Lynx faced not only the Warriors, but a distinct home crowd for Sioux Center. Both sides would trade shots throughout the match, as the score was knotted at 0-0 at halftime, and no one was able to get a goal through in the 2nd half, as the game went to overtime. Two overtime periods came and went, as the score remained 0-0 with the match headed to penalty kicks.
Conner Peck would have his 1st round penalty kick stopped, while Sioux Center’s Cristofer Marquez converted as the Warriors went up 1-0. This was followed by Wilmer Padilla Chavez converting for Webster City, while Sioux Center’s Santi Estrada missed wide left to tie the penalty kicks at 1-1. In the 3rd round, Lynx goal keeper Edwin Ramos Nolasco added a score, while Sioux Center answered with Eric Martin Chavez to keep things tied at 2-2. In Round 4, Israel Torres sailed his PK attempt, only to have Sioux Center’s Waldo Ramos Lopez hit his attempt of the left post to keep things tied at 2-2 going into the final round. In that final round, senior Eddy Fuentes-Chavez converted, and goal keeper Edwin Ramos Nolasco got the save the Lynx needed to give them a 3-2 win and send Webster City to State Semifinals for the first time in school history.
Webster City will face the Gilbert Tigers in the semifinal round of Class 2A State Tournament at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. That game will be carried live on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
