Webster City baseball splits doubleheader with Iowa Falls-Alden

The Webster City Lynx baseball team returned to action on Monday night, as they made the short trip east to take on the Cadets of Iowa Falls-Alden in North Central Conference action at Cadet Baseball Field in Iowa Falls. Webster City entered at 5-5, while Iowa Falls-Alden entered at 3-3.

Webster City got off to a good start in Game 1, putting up 2 runs in the first as Matt Tesdahl scored on an error before Gavin Griffith drove in a run on an RBI double to put the Lynx up 2-0. IF-A responded by scoring on an error in the bottom of the 1st to bring it to 2-1. The Cadets would tie it in the 4th, scoring on another Lynx error to make it 2-2, before another Lynx error and an RBI single put the Cadets ahead 4-2. Webster City would put up a run in the 7th on an Aiden Hrnicek RBI single, but it would not be enough as IF-A captured a 4-3 win.

Gavin Griffith would have the top game at the plate for the Lynx, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double, while Aiden Hrnicek went 1-for-3 with an RBI single. Braylon Dyvig was charged with the loss, allowing 4 runs (0 earned) on 7 hits and striking out 5, as the Lynx tallied 5 errors in the opener.

Game 2 saw the Cadets come out swinging with 2 runs in the first, but Webster City answered with 2 runs in the bottom half of a wild pitch and a Gavin Griffith sac fly to make it 2-2. IF-A put up 2 more runs in the 2nd, but the Lynx responded with 3 runs in the bottom half off two bases-loaded HBP’s and a Carter Mickelson RBI fielder’s choice to make it 5-4. Webster City would then put up 3 runs in the 3rd and 5 runs in the 5th as they led IF-A 13-6. IF-A would put up 2 runs in the 6th to make it 13-8, but Webster City ended things early with a 5-run 6th to walk it off with an 18-8, 6-inning victory.

Junior Matt Tesdahl would have an uber-productive night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 5 RBI. Gavin Griffith would for 1-for-2 with a sac fly and 3 RBI, while also picking up the win by going 5.2 innings, allowing 8 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits and striking out 6.

Webster City baseball returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Storm Lake to take on the Tornadoes in non-conference action at 7 PM.
