Webster City baseball rallies against Newell-Fonda, swept by Urbandale

The Webster City Lynx baseball team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Mustangs of Newell-Fonda in non-conference action at Webster City High School. Webster City entered at 4-3, while Newell-Fonda entered at 1-2.

Newell-Fonda would get the quick start on Friday with an RBI single in the 1st to take a 1-0 lead, before the Mustangs scored on another RBI single in the 2nd to lead 2-0. Webster City answered in the 3rd with a Braylon Dyvig 2-run RBI double to tie the game at 2-2, as Newell-Fonda regained the lead in the 5th off an RBI fielder’s choice. Dyvig would strike again in the 5th, with an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3, before Newell-Fonda once more reclaimed the lead with an RBI double and a sac fly to take a 5-3 advantage. Webster City would then put up a 4-run rally in the 6th as Matt Tesdahl drew an RBI hit by pitch, Carter Mickelson ripped a 2-run RBI single, as Tesdahl then stole home for Webster City to capture a 7-5 lead and a 7-5 win.

Braylon Dyvig put together a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while Carter Mickelson was 1-for-3 with a single and 2 RBI. Mickelson was also the winning pitcher in relief, going 1.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 1 hit and striking out 2.

Webster City would turn around and travel down to Rippey in Greene County on Saturday and take on the Urbandale J-Hawks in a doubleheader at Walt Anderson Field.

The Lynx would fall to Urbandale in Game 1 by a score of 14-0, as the J-Hawks used a 6-run 5th to end the game early. Gavin Griffith, Braylon Dyvig and Alex Staley tallied the only Lynx hits, as Staley was charged with the loss on the mound.

Game 2 saw Urbandale’s offense not relent, as the J-Hawks picked up a 12-2 victory to sweep the doubleheader. Webster City got RBI contributions from Carter Mickelson and Alex Staley, as Staley blasted his first career home run in the 4th inning. Freshman Gordon Bargfrede was charged with the loss on the mound.

Webster City baseball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Iowa Falls to take on the Cadets in a North Central Conference doubleheader, with Game 1 beginning at 5 PM on AM 1570 KZWC and kqradio.com.
