South Hamilton softball drops opener to Nevada, 14-5

The South Hamilton Hawks softball team opened their 2025 season on Tuesday, as they hosted the Nevada Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex in Jewell.

Nevada started the game with a sac fly in the first to take a 1-0 lead, before South Hamilton put up 2 runs in the bottom of 1st to snag a 2-1 lead. Nevada tied the game with an RBI double in the 2nd, before a Jadyn Melohn 2-run home run in the 3rd broke open the flood gates for a 10-run 3rd inning to put Nevada up 12-2. The Cubs put up 2 runs in the 4th to take a 14-2 lead, as South Hamilton put up 3 in the bottom of the 4th with an Emma Ammerman RBI double and a Sydney Flaugh RBI single, but it would not be enough as the Cubs held on for a 14-5 win in 5 innings.

Sydnee Flaugh would go 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Emma Ammerman went 1-for-2 with an RBI double. Jillian Hesse was charged with the loss, allowing 14 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits and striking out 2.

South Hamilton softball returns to action on Wednesday, when they host Grand View Christian at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex, beginning at 7:30 PM.
