Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball drops NCC doubleheader against (3A) #5 Algona

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Tuesday, as they hosted the Algona Bulldogs for a North Central Conference doubleheader at CGD High School. CGD entered with a record of 1-2, while Algona entered at 2-0 and ranked #5 in Class 3A.

Game 1 saw Algona scratch across a run in the 1st and 2 runs in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead, before the CGD bats found a spurt of production in the 3rd, thanks to a Tristan Kakacek RBI triple and Kakacek scoring on a passed ball to cut the score to 3-2. The Bulldogs would respond with 2 runs in the 4th, before a big 6-run 5th to take an 11-2 lead. Algona would then put up 4 more runs in the 7th to punctuate a 15-2 win.

Tristan Kakacek would go 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and 2 walks, while Ethan Hasty went 2-for-3 with 2 singles. Jacob Ruba would be the losing pitcher, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and striking out 3.

Game 2 saw the Bulldogs pounce on the Cowboys early, as Algona put up 4 runs in the 1st, followed by a run in the 2nd and 4 more runs in the 3rd to take a 9-0 lead. Algona would put up 5 runs in the 4th and hold the Cowboys off the board in the 5th to collect a 14-0, 5 inning victory.

Ethan Hasty and Chaz Lane would collect the only Cowboy hits in Game 2, as Hasty’s hit would a double. The Losing pitcher of record was Owen Sweeney, who pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 7 runs on 4 hits and striking out 1.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Thursday, when they host West Bend-Mallard in non-conference action at CGD High School at 7:30 PM.
