Webster City baseball sweeps Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in NCC doubleheader

The Webster City Lynx and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball teams opened their 2025 seasons on Wednesday night, as the two schools played an NCC doubleheader at Webster City High School.

Webster City would dominate game one from the outset, putting up 5 runs in the 1st inning, followed by 5 more runs in the 2nd inning to hold a 10-0 advantage. After putting up 4 more runs in the 3rd, senior Brady Asklund ended things in style with a walk-off 2-run home run to give the Lynx a 16-0 victory in 4 innings.

Alex Staley had the hot bat for the Lynx, as the sophomore went 3-3 with a single, 2 doubles and 8 RBI, while Brady Asklund went 2-for-2 with a home run and 3 RBI. Braylon Dyvig pitched a shortened no-hitter, going 4 innings and striking out 4. CGD’s Owen Sweeney was charged with the loss, going 2 innings and allowing 10 runs (9 earned).

Game 2 saw much of the same, as the Lynx put up 3 runs in the top for the first, followed by a 7-run 3rd inning to lead 10-0 after 2.5. The Cowboys added 2 runs in the 3rd, while Webster City put up a run in the 4th and 3 runs in the 5th to lead 14-2. However, the Cowboys kept the game afloat with a 3-run bottom of the 5th to trail 14-5, as the Lynx answered with 4 runs in the 6th to slam the door in an 18-6 victory.

Freshman Gordon Bargfrede would put together a 2-3 game with 2 singles and 4 RBI, while Alex Staley tallied 2 more RBI in the game. Gavin Griffith was the winning pitcher, going 5.2 innings, allowing 6 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and struck out 4.

Chaz Lane and Ryland Morgan each had 2 RBI for the Cowboys, as Lane went 2-for-3 with 2 singles, as Morgan went 1-for-3 with a single. Jacob Ruba was the losing pitcher for record, allowing 11 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits.

Webster City baseball returns to action Thursday, when they travel to Slater to take on Ballard in non-conference action at 7:30 PM. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Thursday, when they host Manson-Northwest Webster in non-conference action at CGD High School at 7:30 PM.
