Authorities rescued a woman from a partially submerged van in the Des Moines River on Saturday night south of Fort Dodge. The vehicle in the river near Kalo was reported at 8:16 p.m. Authorities recovered the woman safely to shore by around 9:00 p.m.. She was transported by ambulance to the Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center. Reportedly the woman drove the van down the boat ramp at Henderson Avenue and into the water. The current then pushed the van downstream a couple hundred feet. The van was submerged up to its windshield. A motorboat used by Fort Dodge firefighters arrived to rescue the woman. A center punch was used to shatter the driver’s side window of the van. The driver’s side door was pried open to pull the woman into the boat. She was then loaded into the ambulance once they reached shore to be transported to the hospital. Others assisting in the Saturday evening rescue were the members of the Otho Fire Department, Webster County sheriff’s deputies, Iowa State Patrol troopers and the Webster County Conservation Department rangers. The van was removed from the river on Sunday morning.
