Hamilton County meat supplier for rural Luther BBQ facing felony charges for meat mislabeling.

A Hamilton County meat locker that has supplied meat to a BBQ restaurant in Boone County has been charged with two felonies for allegedly selling thousands of pounds of a mislabeled product. An investigation by the Iowa Meat and Poultry Inspection Bureau (IMPIB) and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), the Stanhope Locker allegedly and repeatedly produced and shipped mislabeled meat products to the Whatcha Smoking BBQ and Brew in rural Luther. As a result of the investigation, 46-year-old Wesley Zanker who is the owner of the Stanhope Locker has been charged with ongoing criminal conduct and first-degree fraudulent practice.  Neither the IDALS nor court records indicate there were any issues with the quality of meat provided. Court records state approximately 6,894 pounds of ring bologna from the Stanhope Locker were sold for $49,478.22 on 37 different occasions to Whatcha Smoking from October,2021 through August,2023, Zanker was warned about mislabeling his meat after an investigation in late 2019 and was issued a warning letter in February,2020. Inspection officials noted that he allegedly sold meat products from Stanhope Locker to Whatcha Smokin without a label or identification. Felony charges against Zanker and the meat locker were brought forward last January 24th. Zanker pleaded not guilty to both charges filed against him. The jury trial has been set for Tuesday,June 17th at 9:00 a.m. in Hamilton County District Court.
