Drake Relays Qualifying: Who’s In, Who’s Out on Final Day of Qualifying?

The 115th Drake Relays begin a week from today at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, and as always, a number of area athletes are in the thick of running at America’s Athletic Classic. Today is the final day of qualifying, and we check to see who’s in comfortably, who’s on the edge or who’s on the outside at the moment.

Who’s In?

Boys 100m Dash – Kolby Hodnefield (South Hamilton/T6 – 10.77), Jayden Weinzetl (Webster City/T26 – 10.95)

Boys 400m Dash – Kolby Hodnefield (South Hamilton/9th – 49.76)

Boys 4×100 – South Hamilton (31st – 43.43), Roland-Story (85th – 44.34)

Girls Long Jump  – Adalyn Sporleder (Roland-Story/T16 – 17′ 8″)

Girls High Jump  – MaKayla Beisel (Clarion-Goldfield-Dows/T12 – 5′ 4″)

Girls 4×100 – Roland-Story (52nd – 51.22)

Girls Sprint Medley  – Roland-Story (10th – 1:50.05)

Girls Shuttle Hurdle – Roland-Story (14th – 1:07.96)

Kolby Hodnefield of South Hamilton has set the track ablaze throughout most of the season, he appears to be solidly in 3 events at the Relays in the 100, 200 and 4×100, as the Hawks will likely try to sneak one more relay in to Drake. Webster City’s Jayden Weinzatl is currently in with his 10.95 in the 100m dash on Tuesday, while Roland-Story’s sprint and hurdle group has been mightily impressive. CGD’s Makayla Beisel currently appears to be a lock in the high jump as well.

Who’s Outside Looking In?

Boys 110m High Hurdles  – Jayden Strum (Roland-Story/T48 – 15.21), Jaxon Griffith (Webster City/T61 – 15.31)

Girls 400m Dash – Kam Lande (Roland-Story/17th – 58.63)

Boys 4×100 Relay – Webster City (T168 – 45.64)

Boys 4×200 Relay – South Hamilton (31st – 1:30.71)

Boys 4×400 Relay – South Hamilton (27th – 3:27.99)

Boys Shuttle Hurdle – Roland-Story (28th – 1:01.68)

Girls 4×200 Relay  – Roland-Story (34th – 1:46.97)

Girls Long Jump  – Addy Jeske (43rd – 17′ even)

Hurdles are a tricky event, it’s just as easy to have a massive PR as it is to fall flat on your face, but Jayden Strum and Jaxon Griffith have a chance to make some noise tonight. Webster City’s 4×100 will need a pretty big PR but stickwork can really vault at 4×100 time. South Hamilton will likely choose between the 4×200 and 4×400 on who they want to pursue a Drake shot. Roland-Story’s boys shuttle hurdle squad has continuously improved all season, and high competition tonight can only help, while the Norsemen girls have one more crack at it tonight in the 4×200 and Kam Lande in the 400. Only 6-7″ separates Eagle Grove senior Addy Jeske from a spot in the long jump at Drake as well.
