Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football falls on the road to Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 35-7

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip east on Highway 3 to take on the Bulldogs of Hampton-Dumont-CAL in non-district action at Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School. CGD entered with a 1-0 record, while HD-CAL also entered at 1-0.

Defenses ruled in the early goings in Hampton, as scoring would hold off until late in the 1st quarter, when a JD Morrical punt was blocked and recovered in the endzone for a Bulldogs touchdown to put HD-CAL up 7-0. That 7-0 score would stand until late in the first half, when Bulldog quarterback Ryder Strother would find tight end Austin Hanson over the top for a 19-yard touchdown pass to put HD-CAL up 14-0 at the halftime break.

Second half saw defenses again rule in the early phases, but HD-CAL broke the game open late in the 3rd quarter as Colin Bird broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 21-0. Disaster would strike for the Cowboys soon there after as JD Morrical fumbled in Bulldog territory and Brady Harr scooped up the loose ball and ran it back 62 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter. HD-CAL would put up one more score as Brody Strother picked up a partially-blocked punt and ran it back 44 yards for a touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 35-0. Charlie Campbell would prevent the shutout for the Cowboys, returning the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to make the final score of 35-7.

Charlie Campbell was the player of the game with his 93-yard kick return for a touchdown, while rushing for 30 yards in the loss. JD Morrical was 4-13 with 35 yards throwing the football.
