South Hamilton boys basketball season ends in substate loss to Underwood, 81-50

The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Saturday night, to compete in their Class 2A, Substate 8 final as they took on the Underwood Eagles at Waukee Northwest High School. The Hawks entered at 18-4, while Underwood entered at 23-0.

South Hamilton would hold their own against the high-powered Eagles in the 1st quarter, trailing just 15-8 after the first frame, but the Eagles would soon find their 2nd and 3rd gear, putting up 25 points in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-19 halftime lead. The lead only grew and Underwood kept up the pressure on both ends, leading 71-32 after the 3rd quarter, before cruising to the 81-50 win and their first state tournament appearance in school history.

The KQWC Player of the Game was South Hamilton senior Ryland Ubben, who put up a team-high 17 points in his final game in a Hawk uniform. Mason Boothby led Underwood with a game-high 21 points.

South Hamilton ends their stellar season with a record of 18-5.
