South Hamilton basketball advances to substate final over Pleasantville, 65-57

The South Hamilton Hawks basketball team returned to action on Tuesday night, as they took on the Pleasantville Trojans in the Class 2A, District 16 final at Boone High School. The Hawks entered with a record of 17-4, while Pleasantville entered at 14-9.

Pleasantville would come out of the gate early and set the tone, playing through senior forward Dayson Leerhoff, which gave the Trojans a 15-9 lead after the first quarter. South Hamilton would respond by attacking the rim and the mid-range in the 2nd quarter, as an Owen Renaud put-back at the buzzer put the Hawks down 29-28 at halftime. Pleasantville continued to cling to the lead at 44-42 going into the 4th quarter. Reece Ricke hit a three on the Hawks first possession of the 4th quarter to put them ahead 45-44, and the Hawks never trailed after that, as they came away with a 65-57 win.

The KQWC Player of the Game was Hawks senior Ryland Ubben, who had a game-high 30 points in the win, while Reece Ricke had 12 points for the Hawks. Dayson Leerhoff had 24 points for the Trojans, while freshman Braylon Bingham had 18 points for Pleasantville.

South Hamilton will advance to face undefeated Underwood, who defeated East Sac County 61-51 in the District 15 final, on Saturday night in the Substate 8 Final at Waukee Northwest High School. Tip-off will be at 7 PM and will be carried on 95.7 KQWC and on kqradio.com
