Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball swept by Iowa Falls-Alden in home-opener

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they Cowboys and Cowgirls hosted the Cadets of Iowa Falls-Alden in North Central Conference play at CGD High School in Clarion. The Cowgirls entered at 0-2, while the Cowboys entered at 0-1.

CGD’s girls opened the night with a hot start, as the shots fell early for the Cowgirls, who led 13-10 after the first quarter. However, foul trouble caught up with CGD, as Sawyer Morrical sat most of the first half with 3 fouls, as the Cowgirls trailed 29-25 at halftime. The Cowgirls continued to battle through foul trouble, trailing 38-35 after 3, but Iowa Falls-Alden managed to prevail 50-44. Indy Johnson led the Cowgirls with 18 points, while IF-A’s Ella Sharar had a game-high 24 points.

The boys game followed as the CGD boys got off to a quick start, but IF-A battled back to lead 21-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Cowboys narrowed the margin to just one possession by halftime, trailing 31-29. The 2nd half would be a series of lead extensions by Iowa Falls-Alden, followed by Clarion attempts to bring it back to even, but it was the Cadets that got the final pull, taking home a 69-60 win. Carson Nesheim led CGD with a game-high 20 points, while Iowa Falls-Alden senior Ray Morgan Jr. led the Cadets with 17 points.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows followed Friday night up with a doubleheader against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Saturday.
