Webster City, South Hamilton wrestling compete in tri-dual at Jewell

The Webster City Lynx and South Hamilton Hawks wrestling teams opened their 2023-24 seasons on Tuesday night, as the two welcomed in the Nevada Cubs for a tri-dual at South Hamilton High School in Jewell.

Tuesday’s meet opened with Nevada defeating South Hamilton 42-26, as the Cubs started with a pair of forfeit wins at 106 and 113. Damian Hoover would then defeat Holden Klein in sudden-victory 8-6 to put the Cubs up 15-0. Braden Lewis would pick up a FF for Nevada, before Jaxon Watson got South Hamilton on the board with FF. Braden Young then picked the Hawks first mat win at 150, when he defeated Jaden Grimm in a 6-1 decision. The Hawks then got back-to-back pins from Keyton Remsburg at 157 and Johnathan O’Neal at 165 to bring the score to 21-21. However, Nevada would take 3 of the final 4 bouts to pick up the 42-26 win.

Webster City then took the mats to face Nevada, beginning at 126 lbs with a pair of FF, before Blake Berninghaus picked up the Lynx first mat win at 138 over Braden Lewis in a 1st-period fall. Jaden Grimm would then pin Jaysen Vankham at 150 to get Nevada on the board, before a barrage of falls from Tristan Mason, Isaac Firsching, Luke Estlund, Jayden Weinzetl and Landon Griffin gave the Lynx a commanding 60-6 advantage. The match of the night would come at 113 with #3/#4 Linden Phetxoumphone facing #1/#2 Kaden Weber, a match that Phetxoumphone would clinch thanks to a 5-point move in the 3rd period to get a 7-4 decision, as Webster City wrapped up a 69-11 dual win.

The night wrapped up with the Battle for Hamilton County, as Webster City jumped out to a 18-0 lead that included a Jaysen Vankham pin over Jaxon Watson. South Hamilton would reel off 3 straight wins with a Braden Young pin at 150, a Keyton Remsburg 9-2 decision at 157 and a Jonathan O’Neal pin at 165, to make the dual 18-15. Luke Estlund would settle things down for Webster City with a quick pin at 175, before Graham Peters of South Hamilton stuck Carson Bertran in the first period to make score 24-21 Webster City. However, the lack of lighter weights for South Hamilton allowed Webster City to prevail 60-21 in the dual.

South Hamilton returns to the mats on Saturday, when they compete in the Doug Wood Invitational at Manson-Northwest Webster High School, Webster City returns to the mats on Thursday night, when they take on Boone and Carroll in a tri-dual at Boone High School.
