2023 State Track and Field Championships: Day 1 Recap

All 5 KQRadio teams descended upon Drake Stadium on Thursday, for Day 1 of the 2023 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships. Class 1A and 4A took the morning session and Class 2A and 3A took the afternoon session.

The morning started with the 1A Boys Long Jump, as South Hamilton’s Landon Grove would place 14th with a jump of 19′ 10.25″. Following in the afternoon would be South Hamilton’s Kate Barkema in the 100m dash preliminaries, qualifying for Saturday’s final in a time of 13.01.

Moving to the 2A-3A Session, Roland-Story opened the session with their boys shuttle hurdle relay, which finished in a time of 1:05.17, but were DQ’d over an early leave between the 2nd and 3rd leg. The Norsemen would bounce back as Kamryn Lande placed 8th in the 200m dash prelims to qualify for Saturday’s 2A final. Two area athletes competed in the boys 200m dash prelims, with Eagle Grove’s Cayden Schultz placing 20th in 2A in a time of 23.33, while Webster City’s CJ Hisler placed 23rd in 3A in a time of 23.43.

Field events saw Eagle Grove’s Addyson Jeske place 8th in the 2A Girls Long Jump with a season-best mark of 16′ 9″, while Roland-Story’s Adalyn Sporleder placed 15th in a mark of 15′ 10.5″. In the 3A Boys Discus, Webster City’s Jaxon Cherry placed 8th with a throw of 158′ 10″, with the shot put still to go on Friday.

Returning to the track, Roland-Story placed 7th in the 2A Boys 4×800 Relay in a time of 8:11.74 with the team of Lande-Johnson-Kilstofte-Greenfield, a new season-best time. Sprints then returned to the fold as Roland-Story’s Kamryn Lande placed 12th in the 2A Girls 100m dash in a time of 13.00, while Eagle Grove’s Ayden Feske placed 22nd in a mark of 13.27. The lone area entry in the boys 100m dash was in Class 2A with Eagle Grove’s Cayden Schultz placing 20th in a time of 11.53, while Roland-Story’s Kale Lande would medal in the 2A Boys 400m dash in a season-best time of 50.72.

To cap the night, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows competed in the 2A Girls Shuttle Hurdle Relay and placed 22nd in a time of 1:12.27 with the team of Beisel-C. Hasty-M. Hasty-Trca.
