UNI men fall in season-opener to upstart Nicholls State, 62-58

The UNI men’s basketball team opened its season on Tuesday night, as they hosted the Colonels of Nicholls State. Tuesday was the 2nd-ever meeting between the two schools, the first being a neutral-site game played in Seattle back in 2006. The Colonels would end up evening the series, winning by a score of 62-58.

UNI was led in scoring by Waverly-native Austin Phyfe, who scored a game-high 20 points, while also collecting 9 rebounds. Tywhon Pickford was the Panthers 2nd-leading scorer, with 13 points off the bench. AJ Green in his return, only managed to score 4 points.

Nicholls State had a big day from Ty Gordon, who scored 19 points and was the driving force for the Colonels. Devante Carter added 12 more points, while Latrell Jones hit a pair of crucial three-pointers for Nicholls State.

Next action for UNI will be on Thursday, as they will host the Vermont Catamounts at the McLeod Center. Tipoff scheduled for 5 PM.
