Iowa Central Launches New IT Support Specialist Program to Meet Growing Tech Demand

Iowa Central Community College’s Business and Industry Department is proud to announce the launch of its new IT Support Specialist program — a fast-paced, hands-on course designed to train the next wave of tech professionals.

This six-week program gives participants the practical experience and foundational knowledge needed to succeed in entry-level IT roles. Students will roll up their sleeves and dive into topics like PC hardware, networking, mobile devices, and cybersecurity. The course includes hands-on labs, computer teardown and reassembly, and troubleshooting exercises across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.

“We created this course to meet the rising demand for skilled IT support workers in our region,” said Andrew Thompson, Computer Networking Technology Program Coordinator and Instructor. “Whether you’re looking to break into tech or boost your existing skills, this program delivers real-world experience in a short amount of time.”

The course is also aligned with the CompTIA A+ Core 1 and Core 2 certification exams, giving students a competitive edge as they enter the job market. The cost of the certification exams is included in the cost for the course. “This program offers a fantastic entry point for anyone interested in launching a career in IT support,” said Shelly Blunk, Dean of Economic Development and Continuing Education at Iowa Central Community College. “We’re dedicated to delivering top-notch education that aligns with workforce needs and sets our students up for success.”

The program could be free for qualified applicants. “”We understand that financial challenges can prevent some individuals from enrolling in this course. That’s why we made it a priority to secure GAP Tuition Assistance,” said Melissa Vorrie, Workforce Programs Director. “Through this program, eligible individuals who connect with our team may have the entire cost of the course covered—making it possible to complete the training without incurring debt. In addition to financial support, students who qualify for GAP also benefit from personalized career and education guidance, soft skills training, and a range of support services designed to help them succeed in their chosen career path.”

Enrollment is currently open. Classes run May 12 – June 17, 2025 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm on Iowa Central’s Main Campus in Fort Dodge. Students will also have online modules to complete outside of their scheduled class time. “Accessing training can be a challenge for some of our communities, so we’re hoping the hybrid format helps overcome geographic barriers,” said Michelle Filmer, Community Education Assistant Director.
