Van Diest Medical Center board and union review proposals for new Patient Care Unit contract.

 The members of the Van Diest Medical Center Patient Care Unit presented their proposal for a new contract to the hospital administration on Tuesday afternoon. The unit is represented by the Communication Workers of America. Hourly employees of the patient care union is proposing a wage increase of 7 percent in the first pay period effective July 1,2013. Wage differentials over and above an employee's regular rate of pay includes an evening differential of $1.50 per hour,night differential  of $2.00 an hour and the weekend differential to be an additional $1.00 per hour. As for paid time off, the employees would be paid for any paid time off  hours accrued above 250 hours at a rate of 75 percent per hour in excess of 250. The payment and paid time off reduction would occur in the first pay period in November each year.The Van Diest Medical Center proposed no wage increase for the patient care workers. As for paid time off, the hospital proposed that a vacation request made within 30 days prior to the posting of the schedule would be approved within five days of the request. Vacations requested less than the required time may or may not required. Other proposed changes in the new contract focuses on insurance,education programs and uniforms. The contract is for a one year period. Both the union and hospital officials will meet in closed door meetings next month to work out the language in the new contract.
