South Hamilton School Board looks at calendars for the 2013-14 school year.

During their meeting on Monday evening, the South Hamilton Community School Board was presented with four sample school calendars for the 2013-14 school year. The samples have been in the teacher lounge for input. Superintendent Tim Johnson said the first calendar would have a starting date of August 15th with a week long spring break. The second calendar would have a starting date of August 22 with a week long spring break. The third calendar would have the school year start August 15 with a three day spring break. The fourth would feature the start of the school year on August 22 with a three day break in the spring. The staff will provide the input on which calendar they would support at a future board session.

There was a discussion on school colors. The South Hamilton board voted that all uniforms will be approved by the Athletic Director and consist of only cardinal red and white with a slight accent of black.

In other matters, the board voted to eliminate the paragraph containing a payment of unused sick leave in the board policy regarding personal illness and disability of certified personnel. South Hamilton board members voted to approve the retirement program for the administrative group, support staff and teachers. An offer by Hiala Architecture to develop a 10 year facilities plan was turned down by the school board.

Contracts were approved for the following people and positions: Mindy Gray for Assistant Speech, Tyler Schaefer for Volunteer Girls Basketball, Doug Hatch and Sam Groves for Volunteer Wrestling.

A bid from Classic Designs was approved to build Trophy Cases for the South Hamilton school. Dan Woodin from the Ames Community Schools was approved for Iowa Association of School Boards board member to represent the district.

Lori Kautzky from National Insurance described a special pay plan for retiring staff members. The special pay plan would save the district and the employee FICA which is 7.65% for the district and 5.65% for the employee. The board approved placing the retiring employee's money in the Special Pay Plan.

South Hamilton Board members recognized the South Hamilton GEMS dance team for their participation in state competition.The GEMS were state champions in Class VII Pom, Small School Military and Class 2 Kick. The team also honored for a Sportsmanship Award,a  Judges Award and a Distinguished Academic Award.
